We give homework because it is useful in reinforcing what has been learned in class, it extends and generalizes concepts, it provides practice time, it teaches responsibility, and it helps students develop positive study habits.  We feel that parents are the key to making homework a positive experience for their children. Therefore, we ask that parents make homework a top priority, provide necessary supplies and a quiet homework environment, set a daily homework time, provide praise and support, and contact us if they notice a problem. Please also remind your children to write their full names on their assignments and to check over their work (a recurring theme in 3rd grade).

This year, we will be assigning weekly Sumdog homework for math.  Each week, students will be given two assignments on the program.  Students should be familiar with their logins and how to navigate the site.  We have learned that students love to do homework in this fashion, and that’s why we have chosen this route.  If you do not have internet at home, please inform us, and we will provide your student with a paper alternative assignment.  It should take students about 20-30 minutes at most to complete each assignment, and they will be open from Monday afternoon until Friday at 8:00 am.

In addition to our Sumdog assignments, students are expected to read for twenty minutes per night.  Depending on your child’s needs and/or teacher expectations, students will, at times, be allowed to choose a book of their own or a book will be assigned to students for reading. A reading log will be sent home with students each week that needs to be signed by a parent nightly with the amount of time read also filled in.  If your child needs to borrow a book from our class, please let us know, and we would be more than happy to accommodate this!

Basic math fact memorization is imperative to student success in third grade math and for the future.  Each week, students will participate in a timed quiz for multiplication.  This is to ensure fact mastery.  We ask that students practice their individualized fact throughout the week at home.

We expect our students to give their very best effort on their homework. We expect homework to be neat; our students will be required to do assignments over if homework does not meet these standards, and most importantly, we expect students to do the work on their own. Parents should help their children with homework if a problem arises, but only after children have tried their best to solve it on their own. In no case, however, should parents do homework for their children. We believe in each and every student!

If students still choose not to complete their homework, they also choose to lose certain privileges in the classroom as well as it will affect their grade for “completing homework” on report cards.

If there is a legitimate reason why a student is not able to finish homework, please send a note to us on the day the homework is due stating the reason it was not completed. We strongly believe that positive interactions and time for children to unwind and relax at home is very important. This is why we have limited but meaningful homework. We realize that things do come up during the year.

Thank you, parents, for all your support!
