Week of 10/30:

Good Afternoon, Parents,

What a beautiful way to start off this fall/Halloween week with such nice weather!  We have a busy week here at OACS!

ELA: We are continuing to read "Who Was Thomas Edison?"  as well as create a timeline of his life.  The key skill we are focusing on this week is text features.  Our writing pieces are coming along nicely as we draft each chapter of our informational books.  The next spelling quiz is THIS Friday, November 3rd.

Math: We are continuing to learn division in class as well as many strategies to solving all division problems.  Students are excited to learn the relationships between multiplication and division facts.  As always, we will have a timed multiplication quiz on Thursday this week.

Science: We are wrapping up our unit on properties of matter this week.  Students have learned the three main states as well as characteristics of each.  Last week, we did an investigation on saving a gummy worm (Fred) from his sinking ship.  This week, we will be measuring volume with graduated cylinders.

Social Studies: Still working on map skills, we are learning the types of maps, how to use a scale and differences between maps and globes.

Field Trip: Our first field trip is Monday, December 18th.  Students were sent home on Friday with a permission slip.  We will be traveling to the Orange County History Center: a museum that makes history of our area come to life in hands-on exhibits.  The cost is $17.  We will pick two, random (out of a cup) parent names that have signed up to chaperone on Friday (I'll notify you if you were selected).  Permission slips and payment is due on Friday, 11/3.

Conferences: I still have a few families that I have yet to meet with.  I'll create another short sign up for those families this week.

Red Ribbon Day: Students are encouraged to wear a red shirt on Wednesday for Red Ribbon Week.

Harvest Day: Tuesday, students are more than welcome to wear a fall/Halloween shirt with uniform bottoms.

MOM'S Spirit Night: This Thursday is spirit night at Melts on Main Street in Winter Garden from 3-7 pm.

Friday is our Thanksgiving food drive.  Students may wear non-uniform if they bring a canned good for our collection (rather than $1 this week).

Please let me know if you need anything or have any questions!
