Municipal Election Day: March 8, 2022

Run-Off Election: April 5, 2022 (if necessary)

Swearing-In: The term of office of all elected officials will commence at the next regularly scheduled Commission meeting following the day of the Run-off Election or, if there is no run-off election for any seat or for Mayor, at the next regularly scheduled Commission meeting after the General Elections.

OVERVIEW

The information contained herein is based on laws and election requirements for Town of Oakland elections. For state requirements, please see Florida Statutes Chapter 106. This page is for INFORMATIONAL USE ONLY and is not intended to constitute everything contained in the Town's Charter, Code of Ordinances, or Florida Election Laws related to this subject. Therefore, please refer to Article V of the Town Charter and Chapter 22 of the Code of Ordinances.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Only electors of the town who have resided continuously in the town for at least one year preceding their qualifying date shall be eligible to hold the office of mayor or commissioner.
  • A person may not be a candidate for mayor and commissioner in the same election.
  • Must not hold any other public office (except Notary Public, United States Military)

QUALIFYING (Per Town Charter Article II, Sec. 2.4 and Town Code Section 22)

Qualify by Petition Process

Candidates may qualifying using the petition process. The time period for candidates to qualify using the petition process begins on October 29, 2021, at 8:00 a.m. and ends on November 12, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. Candidates shall qualify using this method by filing a written notice of candidacy with the Town Clerk during the time period above along with collecting signature cards from ten (10) percent of the Town of Oakland registered voters (based on previous countywide general election) or one hundred (100) signatures, whichever is less. Candidates will need to pay a fee to the Orange County Supervisor of Elections office for petition review.

Qualify by Fee Process

Candidates may qualifying by paying a fee. The time period for candidates to qualify by paying a fee begins on November 15, 2021, at 8:00 a.m. and ends on November 18, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. Candidates shall qualify using this method by filing a written notice of candidacy with the Town Clerk during the time period above along with paying to the Town Clerk a qualifying fee of one hundred dollars ($100.00), in addition to any fees required by Florida Statutes. At this time, the fee required by Florida Statutes is an election assessment which shall be an amount equal to 1 percent of the annual salary of the office sought. (F.S. 99.093).
